Manuscript Preparation

Choice of Template

Authors may prepare their manuscript using either of the two officially supported layouts. Both are accepted equally during peer review; choose whichever you find more convenient.

  • Format A — Classic single-column layout
  • Format B — JACS two-column journal layout (recommended for camera-ready submissions)

The general rules below apply to both formats. Format-specific rules follow in their own sections.

Language and Length

  • Manuscripts must be written in English. Either British or American spelling is acceptable, but consistency is required throughout the document.
  • Articles should be between 6,000 and 9,000 words, inclusive of footnotes and bibliography.
  • Book reviews should not exceed 2,500 words.

Blinding

  • Authors should prepare two separate files:
    • Title page: contains author details (name, affiliation, contact information).
    • Blinded manuscript: no author details should be included anywhere in the body, headers, footers, or file metadata.

General Formatting Rules (applies to both formats)

  • The text should be as "flat" as possible, without complex direct formatting. Use the document's styles instead of manual font changes wherever possible.
  • Use a consistent style throughout the manuscript.
  • Limit subheadings to a maximum of two levels below the main title (i.e., 1., 1.1.).
  • Hyphenation: disable automatic hyphenation in MS Word.
  • Italics / bold: use italics or bold for emphasis as needed, but sparingly.
  • Page numbers: number pages consecutively from the first to the last page.
  • Use a single hard return to end a paragraph; do not insert extra blank lines.
  • Indicate new paragraphs with the paragraph style's first-line indent (or a tab, in Format A), not an extra blank line.

Format A — Classic Single-Column Layout

Use this layout if you are preparing a standard typescript-style manuscript for review.

  • Page setting: A4, minimum 2 cm margins on all sides.
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt.
  • Line spacing: 1.5 throughout the document.
  • Alignment: justified on both left and right.
  • Columns: single column for the entire document.
  • Headings: numbered (1., 1.1.), bold, in the same Times New Roman family as the body.
  • References: IEEE style, alphabetical-by-author bibliography accepted; numeric [1], [2], … citation in the body.

Format B — JACS Two-Column Journal Layout (Recommended)

Use this layout when your paper is accepted for publication or when you prefer a camera-ready style at submission. A pre-styled Word template is available on request; alternatively, the formatting rules below describe the layout exactly.

Page

  • Page size: US Letter (8.5″ × 11″).
  • Margins: top 1″, bottom 1″, left 0.7″, right 0.5″.
  • Header / footer: the JACS first-page header appears only on page 1; subsequent pages carry a simple running header ("Journal of Advanced Computing Systems (JACS)" left, "ISSN: 3066-3962" right).

Columns

  • Front matter (title through abstract block): single column, full page width.
  • Body (from "1. Introduction" onwards): two columns, 0.5″ spacing between columns, no rule between them.
  • Tables and figures in the body must span both columns (full text width). A continuous section break is used before and after each table or figure so that block sits in its own one-column section.

Typography

  • Body text: Latin Modern Roman, 11 pt, justified, single line spacing.
  • Title: Calibri, 16 pt, bold, left-aligned.
  • Authors: Latin Modern Roman, 12 pt italic, left-aligned. Superscript affiliation numbers (1, 2, 1,2, …) follow each name.
  • Affiliations: Latin Modern Roman, 8 pt italic, with a superscript leading number that matches the author markers.
  • DOI line: Latin Modern Roman, 9.5 pt, centered, subtle gray.

Abstract and Keywords Block

A three-column borderless table is used to lay out the abstract and keywords side by side:

Keywords (gutter) Abstract
keyword 1, keyword 2, …   Abstract body, justified, 11 pt.

Borders for this block are:

  • A single 0.5 pt horizontal rule above the header row.
  • A single 0.5 pt horizontal rule directly under the "Keywords" and "Abstract" header words.
  • A single 0.5 pt horizontal rule below the entire block.
  • No vertical borders. No outer-column gutter borders.

Headings

  • Level 1 (1. Introduction, 2. Related Work, …): Latin Modern Roman, 12 pt, bold, color #1F497D.
  • Level 2 (1.1. Background, 2.3. Benchmarks, …): Latin Modern Roman, 11 pt, bold, black.

Tables

  • Top and bottom borders 1 pt black; a 0.5 pt rule under the header row; subtle 0.25 pt gray rules between body rows.
  • Header row in 11 pt bold with light gray (#F2F2F2) shading.
  • Tables span the full page width (100% of the section) and are horizontally centered.
  • Captions are centered above the table in the form Table N. Description., with the Table N. prefix bolded.
  • "Note: …" lines that appear below a table are in italic 9 pt.

Figures

  • Centered, spanning the full page width.
  • Captions are centered below the figure in the form Figure N. Description., with the Figure N. prefix bolded.
  • Submit figures separately as JPEG / PNG / TIFF / GIF at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI. Figures will be published online in color but may be printed in black and white.

References

  • IEEE style throughout: numeric [1], [2], [3], … markers in the running text.
  • The reference list itself is in body-text size (11 pt Latin Modern Roman), justified, single line spacing, no extra space between entries.
  • Each entry uses a hanging indent so the [N] marker is clearly visible to the left of the entry text.
  • References are arranged in the order in which they are first cited (IEEE convention).

Citations and Quotations (both formats)

  • Complete sentences should be placed within "double quotation marks".
  • Partial quotations should be placed within 'single quotation marks'.
  • Quotations longer than one line should be indented to form a separate block.
  • Omissions in quotations should be indicated with (…).
  • Additions or clarifications should be placed within [square brackets].
  • Authors must obtain permission for any copyrighted material included in the manuscript.

Special Words and Paragraphs (both formats)

  • Foreign words should be italicized or placed within 'single quotation marks'.
  • Specific terms should be placed within 'single quotation marks'.
  • Avoid extra blank lines between paragraphs.

Notes (both formats)

  • Use the MS Word footnote function for notes.
  • Footnotes should appear at the end of each page.
  • Note numbers should be superscript and numbered sequentially.
  • In Format A, notes are double-spaced in 12 pt; in Format B, notes follow body typography (11 pt Latin Modern Roman, single spacing).

Tables and Figures — File Submission Rules (both formats)

  • Tables should be compiled using actual Word tables (or tabs in Format A), never spaces.
  • In Format A: maximum table width 12 cm; upload tables in a separate MS Word file.
  • In Format B: tables sit inline at full page width within the manuscript; supplementary versions may also be uploaded separately.
  • Figures should have a minimum resolution of 300 DPI.
  • Upload figures as separate files (JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF) along with their captions.
  • Indicate the placement of tables / figures in the text using square brackets (e.g., [Figure 1]) if they are uploaded separately.
